!!!, commonly pronounced “Chk Chk Chk”, is a band based out of New York City and Portland, Oregon. They first formed back in 1996 in Sacramento, California by merging members from the groups Black Liquorice, Popesmashers and The Yah Mos, all local bands from the Sacramento area. Their music has been described as a combination of dance-punk, funk, psych rock and disco. As If, their best effort since 2007's Myth Takes, is their sixth studio release. The Japanese edition contains the bonus track “Butt Dial/Bitter Lemon”.

As If manages to flex a bit of muscle on the dance floor but it's also the band's most buoyant release to date. It isn't as aggressive as some of their earlier stuff, but the tradeoff is clarity, creativeness and better songwriting. Of course, it's all still very dance heavy and even boasts several groovin' singles. I would describe the music as disco-funk and you really get the impression that they had a lot of fun with the making of this record.

Unfortunately, AS If isn't without its flaws. There are a few tracks such as “Sick Ass Moon”, “Bam City” and “I Feel So Free” that feel a bit bland when compared to the other songs. But don't worry, the record never runs out of gas, especially if you can get your hands on the Japanese edition. Standouts include “Every Little Bit Counts”, "Freedom15", “Ooo”,  “All The Way”, “Til The Money Runs Out”, “Lucy Mongoosey” and “Butt Dial/Bitter Lemon”. AS If isn't perfect, but it's still a refreshing release from a band that's been together for the past 18 years.
