Toro y Moi, also known as Chazwick Bradley Bundick, is a musician from Columbia, South Carolina. What For? is the most recent release from Toro Y Moi and it's a record that melts the heart of any indie lover from a compilation level, but disheartens from a lyrical standpoint. The album is somewhat similar to Anything in Return by maintaining some of that 90's dance and R&B sound.
With What For? Bundick put together a well-structured indie psych rock record complete with trip filled synths and wavy style guitar riffs. From his Les Sin’s mantras to Toro Y Moi works, it is obvious that Bundick has matured and evolved. There's a welcome grooviness to What For?, his fourth studio release. There are some really great moments throughout that showcase Bundick's evolution in sound and instrumentation.
Though this is, the record lyrically falls short. No substantial subject matter is voiced. The words simply match the calm psych filled atmosphere that is What For?. Nevertheless, if there's one thing to take away from this record it's the infectious good mood feel it will leave you with. The vibes spread throughout the tracks are undeniable.
What For? is a record that will take a couple listens to grow on you. Go at it with patience, you'll find your way.
